Teaching our children about the beauty of GRATITUDE also teaches them about the ugliness of ingratitude. But are we using a simple habit to keep this a focus of our family foundation? I know it's difficult to raise our children with this virtue when we are in a culture of increasing narcissism, selfishness, and immediate gratification. Today's episode includes a reflection from one of my favorite daily devotions: The Better Part by Fr. John Bartunek. In it, he shares Luke 17:11-19, the story of Jesus curing the 10 lepers. Only one comes back to say, "thank you". Fr. Bartunek writes: "Not to live with an attitude of gratitude towards God is more than being impolite - ingratitude is ugly because it's positively unjust. Gratitude on the other hand, is one of the most beautiful flowers in the whole garden of virtue...what a pity that it is as rare as it is lovely."

How many quotes did you hear this week? Any that really stuck out to you? Use them to create conversation with your child! My daughter, Julia, shared one with me at bedtime prayers and it gave us the greatest conversation starter! It was all about shifting our mindset to see the good in the day and know that we really can stay positive among the "thorns". It opened the door to talk about overcoming negative situations and it carried positivity into the next day. This one quote really made us stop and reflect on how we have been living our days and getting overwhelmed by situations we can't even control. It taught us what we can do to feel more in control and more at peace with the rough days that come our way. Listen to this episode and share the same quote and conversation with your family!

Some days, it's crazy wondering what the heck kind of world we live in, isn't it? Add the state of politics and cultural issues and it feels like too much to keep up with. Through the upstream swim and the constant fight to protect our family, it can be overwhelming knowing how to keep our values and morals strong against the attacks from "out there". Today, on this election day 2022, we are talking about the secret weapon we all have in order to stand up against the crazy and stand for FAMILY. It can truly change our country -- if we just COMMIT to it. Let's take time to gather where it matters, with each other right in our own home with our own family around our family dinner table.
